Covetable Things 03: Chunky Blues

This That These 2

This That These 2 (click here for item details)

It rained on and off all day yesterday-eeeeep!  Felt like September ushered in a little fall preview for us.  All I wanted to do was drink hot tea, cozy up on the couch in my chunky cardigan and watch a  John Hughes film.  You too!?  What a coincidence!  I can never decide which season I love most-summer or fall?  But, luckily I live by the ocean so it never really goes to the extreme either way and I can enjoy pretty mild weather all year long.  This makes dressing pretty easy.  Although I do crave the desert heat of where I grew up sometimes as well as crisper air in autumn.
So, my go-to styling for fall while living by the beach looks like the above.  No heavy wool coats, mittens or fuzzy scarves.  More like a chic Kurt Cobain, a la that rad checkered cardigan from Topshop!  Simple, no fuss tomboy inspired styling-that's me.  And, in a color palette that's a bit more subdued for me; less brights, more royal blues, charcoal, midnight, mustard yellow, rusty reds & oranges and creams.
Cozy and comfy.  A good pair of broken in boyfriend cuffed jeans, fun socks to wear with a sturdy pair of boots, a soft vintage tee and a whimsical canvas tote bag are my favs.  This outfit is perfect for a weekend spent walking the dog, making soup and snuggling with the ones you love as the days get shorter and a bit chillier.
What are your favorite fall go-to items?  Are you missing summer already?  The spirit of summer will always be missed, as the moon turns a somber bluish and the warm sun dips quickly behind green hills.

House Tour Part 1: Living Space

As promised, a house (very small house) tour!  This is part 1, which showcases our extremely cozy living room/front room.  I decided to break up the tour into parts because even though my house is mega tiny, each room is utilized to the tee and decorated with my favorite items.
Seriously, did I mention how tiny my house is?  Oh, I did...well, it's small & I could have done the whole tour in one post, but that's no fun!
Introducing Casa de Prospect!  Watch out, lots of color in such a small place!

front door & chair nook (we have so little seating in this space that I have to utilize every corner for chairs or cushions for sitting). the vintage drawstring purse is one from my collection that I couldn't give away when we moved because I love the pattern and color too much
view from the front door of the whole living space with fire place straight ahead, couch to the left. the long wooden coffee table was a purchase specifically for using in my Nana's big house but I love it so I had to keep it. it holds pretty art books, brass owls & fauns and fresh flowers
more beauties found on my long coffee table. the old, round Mexican platter belonged to my Nana as well as the little porcelain hand painted cat (I have lots of little things from Mexico here & there because they were my Nana's & she traveled there quite often)
my beloved red hot air balloon couch! I had to put my 1950s vinyl turquoise couch in storage because it was way too big for this house! I like the colorful couch by the sunny window...blissful spot
one of my favorite old lamps by the couch-Toby found this for me in a Bakersfield antique shop right before we moved to San Francisco when we were like 19 years old. it was free because the wiring was all messed up, but Toby fixed it & I found the pink paisley shade at a thrift shop in the city. the old chair is also another favorite that I can't seem to ever part with-it belonged to my sister and mom at some point (we all owned it) & I love the pattern on the upholstery. bison pillow was thrifted
the fireplace mantel is my absolute favorite part of this space. it's painted white so it's nice and bright and has the original light fixtures. most of my prized possessions sit up there on the mantel-the things I like to look at everyday. the camel bag was found at a thrift store for $4 bucks and now it hangs over the fireplace gate and is used as a colorful storage solution (lord knows I need all the storage I can get)
to the right of the fireplace is another speaker and this recently thrifted woven Danish-Modern style chair. I like it because it's small & doesn't take up too much space, offering another seating possibility. close by (against the wall facing the couch) is my Nana's antique buffet that I lovingly use for our TV and record player. beneath it is our amplifier, dvd player and vintage suitcase used as yet another cute storage solution
and we wouldn't be Benicia and Toby without our art wall. this amazing vintage porcelain elephant planter sits atop a speaker and houses a prickly house plant
bookshelf, which is the first thing you see when walking through the front door.  more favorites on the top shelf, including my Nana's fish & blue beaded necklace, my Enid doll, jar of buttons, Japanese box of doll wigs, nesting dolls and my Nana's frida-esque candle holder.
I had lots of old suitcases that I used in my shop for display. I kept my favs and now they are used for storage and as a side table next to the couch, where I put my beer while I watch Star Wars (no, really!!)

Thanks for coming along!  The rest of the house is still to come!

Wish List

The New Year is here & I am simply happy to be welcoming a healthy baby boy into this world.  I didn't make any resolutions, except maybe to be better at budgeting & money management (this is one I strive for every year!).  I thought it would be way more fun to make a little wish list; a virtual shopping must have.  Since I haven't gone shopping in a very long time, which is actually a good thing, these are a few things I wouldn't mind having.  Some are for the babe (sorry, it's super hard not to stumble upon adorable things for baby), some for me and some just because!

Wish Whimsy

Babes Booties

A pair of knitted booties have been on my list of must-have's for the Little Mister.  So, imagine my excitement when two pairs were gifted to us!  These are beyond adorable & I wish they had some in my size!

I adore this print from the talented San Diego artist, Kelli Murray.  That mama bear & baby bear are too cute and this would look good in babes room or on our art wall.

Um, I would love this whole outfit!  This style is effortless, chic and a bit haphazard all at once.  It looks like a perfect go-to outfit for a soon-to-be mama who still wants to look stylish, but remain comfortable (button down blouses are a must for breastfeeding).

Mocs Collage

A great pair of moccasins-always in style and always comfortable.  I love those ankle, fringe ones & the brick red color of the second pair is lovely.

I have been itching for new dish ware for a while now.  I love these!  The yellow and gray is a match made in color heaven & these have glorious whimsical elements!  Sophisticated with just enough youthful funkiness (sounds just like me...haha).

Pendleton Bag

This gorgeous wool Pendleton bag was on my wish list forever....then, for Christmas, the Hub gifted it to me!  It has every color I love, like the perfect desert landscape and he also gave me a pair of super warm mittens.  Oh, that man, I love him!
